Geography trips were a bit of a novelty at Grange. This particular one was organised by a Geography teacher called Ron (or Roy) Heywood. He took us for Physical Geography in the Sixth Form while Mr Cheetham, Head of Geography, took us for the rest.

The trip involved being driven by mini-bus to a hostel in Stair, near Keswick, which was our base for the week. The mini-bus would have trouble passing an MOT today and at one point we free-wheeled downhill as we were running out of petrol! (Should I sue for the trauma caused?)

We did a great deal of walking, including scaling Helvellyn and crossing Striding Edge - a knife-edge glacial ridge (see photo, right). A town study of Cockermouth was also included. One evening we took a trip to the pictures in Keswick to see “The Jolson Story” (strange what the memory retains ...and discards)

The Great Outdoors

Lake DistrictIn the summer of 1962 Ron Hardaker, Ian Shaw and myself organised a week’s walking trip in the Lake District staying at youth hostels along the way. This particular trip, before our GCE results, was memorable in lots of ways - blisters, rain etc. However, it didn’t put us off and I made sure that on future trips I used better equipment - waterproofs, boots etc.

After that initial trip we organised further trips to the Lakes (Ambleside, Grasmere, Coniston, Keswick, Honister, Elterwater etc) and to the Yorkshire Dales (Malham, Ingleton, Dent etc) during the school holidays. All our trips were by public transport, changing at Lancaster on trips to the Lakes and at Skipton for the Dales.

Different groups of us went at various times and a recent visit to the loft unearthed this photo (left) of a trip to the Lakes in 1963.From L to R:Derek Northin, Terry Wetherell, Steve Arundel (non-Granger, a friend of mine) and Alan Woodhead. (GB)
