1963 Trip

Ian Johnson has kindly passed on a copy of the school trip itinerary to Germany, Switzerland and Italy in 1963

DoverSaturday 3 August Assemble at school at 8 am and leave at 8.30 am via Wakefield and the Great North Road to Grantham, arriving about 11.45 for lunch. Then proceed via Baldock to London, arriving about 5.15 pm for tea at the Festival Gardens, Battersea Park. Leave London about 6.45 and arrive in Dover about 10.30pm.

Sunday 4 August Leave Dover Car Ferry Terminal at 00.01 hours and travel by car ferry to Ostend, arriving about 4.30 am. Then resume the journey by coach, travelling via Brussels and Namur to Marche. After a short break continue via Bastogne, Arlon and Luxemburg to Trier, arriving about 1 pm for lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast at the Hotel Deutscher Hof

St Gotthard PassMonday 5 August Leave Trier after breakfast at 7.30 am and travel via Lebach, Homburg, Pirmasens and Landau to Karlsruhe. After a break for lunch, continue on the autobahn to Freiburg and then to Titisee. Leave again after a short break and travel via Lenzkirch and Bonndorf to Singen, arriving about 7.30 pm for dinner, bed and breakfast at the Hotel Lamm.

Tuesday 6 August Leave after breakfast at 7.30 am. After a halt at Schaffhausen to see the Rhine Falls, proceed via Winterhur, Zurich and Zug to Lucerne. After a short break, continue via Sarnen and the Brunig Pass to Meiringen and stop there for lunch. Then proceed over the Susten Pass and the St Gotthard Pass to Airolo and, after a short break, to Bellinzena and Agnuzzo, arriving about 7.30 pm for dinner and stay of 10 nights at the Hotel Cas Coray.

Mont Bre FunicularWednesday 7 August Sightseeing in Agnuzzo or Lugano

Thursday 8 August am at leisure, pm trip up Monte Bre by funicular.

Friday 9 August Full day excursion by coach to into Italy, visiting among other places Milan and Como (Venice also added later)

Saturday 10 August at leisure in Agnuzzo or Lugano.

Sunday 11 August am free in Agnuzzo pm trip to by launch on Lake Lugano.

Monday 12 August am free pm ascent of Monte Lema by chair lift.

Tuesday 13 August At leisure in Agnuzzo or Lugano.

Lake MaggioreWednesday 14 August Full day excursion round Lake Maggiore by coach, visiting Locarno, Ascona, Pallanza, Stresa, Sesto Calende and Varese.

Thursday 15 August At leisure in Agnuzzo or Lugano.

Friday 16 August Leave Agnuzzo after breakfast at 7.30 am and travel via Menaggio, Lake Como, Chiavenna and the Maloja Pass to St Moritz, staying there for lunch. The proceed via the Julier Pass to Chur and Sargans, continuing after a short break via Buchs Wattwil, Wil and Kanstanz to Singen, arriving about 7.30 pm for dinner, bed and breakfast at the Hotel Lamm.

Saturday 17 August Leave Singen after breakfast at 7.30 am and travel via Donauesschingen and Rottweil to Tubingen. After a short break, continue via the autobahn to Karlsruhe, stopping there for lunch before proceeding via Pirmasens and Lebach to Trier, arriving about 7.30 pm for dinner, bed and breakfast and lunch at the Hotel Deutscher Hof.

Sunday 18 August After a morning at leisure leave Trier after an early lunch and travel through the Duchy of Luxemburg to Marche. After a short break, continue via Namur and Brussels to Ostend, arriving there about 9.30 pm.

Monday 19 August Travel by night car-ferry from Ostend to Dover and then to London, arriving about 9 am for breakfast at Forte’s Restaurant in Oxford Street. Leave London about 10.15 am and proceed to Grantham for lunch, leaving again about 3 pm and arriving at school at 5.45 pm.

This 17 days holiday, covering 2400 miles, cost £34.

Rules

Teddy BoyThese are very few but are essential to the success of the holiday.

1) No boy will wear ‘Teddy-boy’ dress. We would like as many boys as possible to wear school uniform on the outward journey.

2) No boy will smoke when in the school party.

Drunk3) Any boy found to be suffering from the effects of intoxicating liquor will be punished on the spot and the Headmaster and his parents informed.

4) No boy must go out alone.

Sunbathing5) There must be no prolonged periods of sunbathing.

6) There must be no hooliganism in the coaches, in the hotels or outside.

7) Boys must be in the hotel at a stipulated time each evening.
