Swimming GalaThe event was most enjoyable; race followed race with admirable briskness and the interest never flagged. The swimming and diving reached a high standard and promises well for the Inter-Grammar Gala. New records were set up in no less than 12 events, with Dixon, the 2 Bennetts, Bateman, Green and Wilkinson all beating previous best times. A boys’ team beat a staff team by the narrowest of margins. Perhaps if Mr Baines’ beard had not slowed him down by just that fraction the result would have been reversed. As a grand finale Mr Steele performed a multiple somersault from the top board.
After the gala an exhibition game of water-polo was played, in which a Dolphins team of Grange boys lost narrowly to a team from Huddersfield. Perhaps the evening’s races had taken the edge off our players, but we were impressed with Hanson’s sharp-shooting and Bannister’s goalkeeping. It was a change to see him keeping ‘em out instead of popping ‘em in.
